39 Steps is a book that highlights the danger that runs the lives of researchers and journalists when they investigate the mafia that is presented in politics and society. Although I did not like the book, I can emphasize the importance of respecting the rights of human beings regardless of race or profession, such as the right to life and freedom of expression.
This book talks about the life of a character who by chance of life is involved in a problem of the political mafia for trying to help a friend who was carrying out an investigation against the Germans and when he is killed his life is in danger what must flee in search of his safety but continues with the mission that his fallen companion was carrying out, following the clues that he had written in his notebook and running the same danger that his companion ran before being killed.
First, the right to free expression is violated because the characters who have the information about the Germans must be hidden because they have a threat of death and must flee leaving everything behind to survive, in society and in journalism is always violated the right to free expression, as the politicians or the rich people of each place manage the information in their favor so as not to be arrested or popularized, they also have the possibility of manipulating, hiring and bribing many people to keep them quiet let it be the rumors or the truthful information about the atrocious acts that you have committed.
Second, the right to life is violated because the investigator is cruelly murdered and his friend must flee to keep his life safe because he also receives a death threat. Not only have important information about the influential people of society violates the right to life, but have a difference in skin color or race, or be from another country or have another culture, as reflected in the book.
From my point of view, the book 39 steps can be an invitation to reflect as a society towards the importance of respecting the differences of race and opinion regardless of who has money and who does not, in addition each person is free to decide which profession wants to carry out in your life without having to think if your life is in danger. For example, in Colombia, the right to free expression and life is violated every day because independent journalists are threatened or killed when they investigate situations related to the corruption of the country.
